On April 10, 2018, the anniversary of my mother’s death, I created an account on Ancestry.com to honor her memory. She had never met her biological father, and I hoped to find a missing piece of her story. Coincidentally, that same day was National Siblings Day. A few months later, I matched with a brother I never knew I had, Paul, who was born in Arkansas and adopted by a family in New York.

When we met, we immediately formed a strong bond. Paul shared that he had a rare kidney disease and had already undergone one transplant. In December 2023, his donor kidney failed, and he returned to dialysis. When that happened, I didn’t hesitate. I volunteered to donate my kidney.

Over months of blood work, scans, and psychological evaluations, I realized I wasn’t afraid of the surgery itself. I was afraid of not being healthy enough to help. On March 14, 2024, World Kidney Day, I donated my left kidney to my brother. Through this experience as a living kidney donor, I learned that giving life can deepen purpose, health, and connection not only for the recipient, but for the giver as well.

Since donating, my life has become fuller, healthier, and more meaningful than I ever imagined. Donating my kidney did not diminish my life; it expanded it. I am participating in the 2026 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon to show others that they can do the same and to support Kidney Donor Athletes, Inc.
