This October, and thanks to the National Ataxia Foundation, I have once again committed to an incredible challenge: the Xtreme Hike, a demanding trek across the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The journey will test me physically and mentally, but I know that this challenge is nothing compared to the daily challenges faced by those living with ataxia.
At 24, I learned that I had inherited the SCA3 gene—the same rare disease that has taken so much from my dad, Bill, including his ability to walk and drive. Now, at 39, I am a wife and mother of three. I am currently pre-symptomatic, and I stay active every day while I wait for the day symptoms may begin.
For me, this hike is about more than reaching the finish line. It is about taking action while I can, raising awareness, supporting research, and fighting for a future where an ataxia diagnosis doesn’t mean watching your abilities slowly disappear.
The Xtreme Hike is my way of pushing back against this disease, honoring my dad and everyone affected by ataxia, and turning hope into action. I’m hiking for a cure—and I hope you’ll join me in the fight.
