Cancer has profoundly impacted the people and communities I love. It grips, consumes, and devastates. But, it has also shown me extraordinary strength. I ride to honor my grandpa, my community, and anyone who has been affected by cancer.

I dedicate my ride to my grandpa, Ernesto, who passed away on April 19, 2019 after battling esophageal cancer. His legacy as an internal medicine doctor, professor, author, and historian shaped my passion for learning and adventure. The impact he left on his community in Maracaibo, Venezuela is invaluable. He expanded access to rheumatological care for the people of Zulia, trained generations of medical professionals, and advocated for the preservation of Venezuelan history in a time of great strife. My time with him was short, but I carry his memory with me on every ride and seek to serve my community with as much devotion as he did. 

Texas 4000 for Cancer cultivates hope of ending cancer before it grabs holds of another life, with the distance from Austin to Alaska embodying just how far we can go to walk alongside others in their toughest moments. The ride means more than biking 4000 miles. Each mile ridden, dollar raised, and story shared helps fund cancer research/support services while reminding someone they are never alone. What a gift to spread hope in such a way. 

Through T4K, I hope to be shaped into someone who lives with more purpose, serves those in need without question, and encourages my teammates on the toughest of days. My prayer is that the road to Alaska will be marked by hope, glorifying to God, and made possible by the strength of Christ.
