The week before I moved to college, my brother received a phone call from our primary care physician, drastically changing our family's lives. Stage Four Hodgkin's Lymphoma was his diagnosis. I remember our mom constantly asking what was wrong through the Ring Camera as she was taking care of cancer patients herself at an infusion center as a registered nurse. My dad, also at work, rushed back home to get my brother started on treatment as soon as possible. I still remember the fear and uncertainty I felt, just frozen in the living room trying to figure out what to say. It didn't feel real. I hate to say it, but cancer made my family grow closer together. I remember the disconnected FaceTime calls I had with my family in my tiny, cramped dorm, sharing stories about freshman year with my two siblings. I remember calling my parents during my brother’s biopsies, chemotherapy appointments, and scan days. It was so terrifying but doing it together as a family made that season in our lives much less scary. My brother is now in remission! His cancer diagnosis is what inspired me to join Texas 4000 for Cancer. Although this journey is nerve-racking, especially as someone who was never really an athlete or a fundraiser, knowing that the money that I raise is going towards cancer research is what keeps me going. It reminds me that treatment is constantly improving, and that through this work, families affected by cancer will have more options in terms of support services and treatment.
