As a mom to a little girl, learning about Rett Syndrome completely changed my heart. I personally do not know a child with Rett, but I cannot imagine the pain families go through watching their once healthy child slowly lose the ability to speak, walk, use their hands, and communicate with the world around them.

Rett Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects little girls. Children are born seemingly healthy, but between the ages of 1–3 years old, they begin to lose skills they had already developed due to a mutation affecting the MECP2 protein in the brain. Many children with Rett require lifelong, around-the-clock care.

What moved me the most is that these children are still incredibly intelligent, aware, and full of life – their bodies simply cannot respond the way they want them to.

Today, there is still no cure, but there is hope. Research has shown that Rett Syndrome may be reversible with continued medical advancements and funding.
