The Jackson Sisters
Help us run towards a cure as we take on the Disney Fairytale Challenge!
Join us in raising $1,932 to help fund research for a cure as we take on 19.3 miles in 2 days. Embracing the power of Disney's most iconic representation overcoming hardship through the unbreakable bond between two sisters, Anna and Elsa.
We're a family of runners, though we haven't always been. Several years ago after my first marathon, my sister, mom, and dad laced up their shoes and joined in on the "fun". What started as a physical activity has turned into an incredible bonding experience for everyone in our family, including the in laws.
This year my sister and I are doing our first ever fundraising race -- and we are so grateful to be a part of the Girl Power 2 Cure team and their efforts to raise funds for research for Rett Syndrome.
What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder that predominantly affects females, though it does present itself in males. It is characterized by a single gene mutation that leads to underproduction of the important brain protein known as MECP2. Without the protein, kids begin to lose acquired skills between 1 and 3 years old, most losing their ability to speak, walk or use their hands. Complications like seizures, scoliosis, and potential for sudden death make this syndrome incredibly scary for parents and familes even on the best of days.
Despite their physical disabilities, girls and boys with Rett Syndrome function at a similar cognitive level to their peers. Amidst the mass confusion in their central nervous systems, they are smart, strong, and resilient. Today, there is no cure. But powerful experimental treatments with mice and primates have proven that once MECP2 protein levels are restored to normal levels, symptoms subside -- giving hope to the brave girls and boys living with this disorder.
