Our family’s world changed when our daughter, Marianna, began having seizures at just four months old. At six months old, she was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a rare, lifelong, drug-resistant form of epilepsy caused by a pathogenic SCN1A variant. Since then, Marianna has endured prolonged seizures, emergency room visits, multiple medications, therapies, and more medical appointments than any little girl should have to know. But Dravet is only part of her story. She is joyful, determined, funny, and incredibly loved—and she inspires us every single day. This year, I’m participating in the Dash for Dravet Turkey Trot in honor of Marianna and every family living with Dravet syndrome. As a Dravet Syndrome Foundation Ambassador and Marianna’s mom, I’ve seen firsthand how important research, education, advocacy, and family support are.
