My Junior Achievement "Why"

It takes people, investing in people, to make a lasting change.

A few years ago I was challenged to write my personal leadership statement.  This one page document would capture not only my leadership style and values but also my purpose; boiled down to a simple personal mission.  My one thing.  My true north.  After months of revisions and refinement I concluded my life’s mission statement: I want to make a difference with people who want to make a difference.

This comes down to two things, Impact and Legacy.  While we may not all be CEOs, mayors or city council members, superintendents or leaders of noble non-profits; everyone wants to be part of something bigger than themselves.  To make a difference, add value, change someone’s life for the better and make an impact in the world.

I chose to get involved with Junior Achievement because, while education is a pillar of every society, somehow financial literacy has been left behind.  What’s more is this lack of knowledge is crippling our young people, destroying opportunities and weakening our collective and individual futures.  Fortunately, we can change this by being intentional, serving and being proactive.  With Junior Achievement’s K-12 educational program on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness; we can prevent the cycle of debt before it starts, help our young people learn practical money management skills, strengthen our future business leaders and connect the classroom to the workplace with real job knowledge and relevant experience.

But we need help.  For too long I was on the sidelines and watched.  I sat idle while others lead by example, gave of themselves, mentored and encouraged, made an impact and united for a common goal.  And so it was time where I said, “no more,” got off the sidelines and made it personal.  I got serious about investing in others and committed to making a lasting change.  Simply put, I stopped saying “they” or “someone” and started saying “I”.  Be the change you want to see

You can make a real difference in the world but only if you start small.  It starts with one.  It starts with you.  It starts with me.  Start making an impact.  Invest in the life of a young person.  Get involved with Junior Achievement.  For over 100 years they have been teaching work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through supporters and volunteers just like you.  Let’s work together to change this world one community, one school and one life at a time.
