At Rocco's 4-month check up, his pediatrician detected a murmur when listening to his heart and referred him to be seen by a cardiologist. She didn’t think it was seriously but just wanted to double check. We went in for that appointment about 2 weeks later and our worst fears came to life when an echocardiogram showed that Rocco had a coarctation of the aorta. Our hearts shattered as we were immediately escorted to the cardiac ICU at Children's Hospital. Amazing doctors and nurses monitored Rocco Friday-Sunday as we prepared for his surgery Monday afternoon. After lots of tears, prayers, and anticipation, Rocco underwent surgery to remove the narrowed part of his aorta. We were so blessed that everything went as perfectly as it could have. That week was an absolute whirlwind that we often look back at not even knowing how we made it through. We go back to Children's fairly often for echocardiograms and checkups with his cardiologist. Though his main heart issue was fixed, there are still other areas of his heart that will need monitoring throughout his life. The team at the hospital and the clinic continue to amaze us with their kindness and expertise. We never expected parenthood would take us down such a scary road but are ever thankful for the Children's heart team for saving our precious baby boy.
