On April 21st, Kayla and I will once again be Walking for the Animals to raise funds and awareness for SPCA Florida.
Kayla, our 8 year-old black lab mix, came to SPCA Florida as a transfer from Polk County Animal Control, in need of medical care. She had chronic ear infections and skin problems that had caused her to lose the hair on her hindquarters. There are indications of an earlier injury to her leg, which has become arthritic, and her tail appears to have been cut off, rather than professionally docked. Kayla was cared for by SPCA Florida staff for several months while she healed, before becoming available for adoption.
Today Kayla walks with a slight limp, but her black coat is thick and shiny. She is full of happy wiggles and is probably the cuddliest dog I have ever known! SPCA Florida takes in and rehomes over 4,000 cats and dogs annually. They will only euthanize an animal if medically or behaviorally it is beyond their abilities to cure, or at the request of an owner. In 2017 their live release rate was 94%. In addition, SPCA Florida's Safety Net Programs provide alternatives for dog and cat relinquishment to the shelter – keeping many more animals who have homes from entering the already overburdened shelter, and helping those newly adopted animals to remain in their adoptive homes.
