Berkley was born September 28, 2015. We didn't know until she was born that she had a heart defect. She was born with a ASD (hole between the top 2 chambers of her heart) and a VSD (hole between the bottom 2 chambers of her heart). We knew given the size of her VSD that surgery was inevitable because it could cause her not to gain weight therefore a failure to thrive. The goal was to get to 6 months old before we embarked on surgery to allow her to get bigger & stronger. Unfortunately after weekly weight checks and fortified formula she was diagnosed with failure to thrive at 9 weeks old. At 10 weeks Berkley had life saving open heart surgery to repair the holes in her heart. We knew this was impairative to save her life. On Wednesday December 9, 2015 we handed our daughter over to a surgeon we met one time and put all of our trust & faith into Children's Hospital Cardiovascular Unit (CVCC) and their Dr's to save her life and give her a chance to be the little girl she deserved to be. She was in the hospital a total of 16 days and she went home a week before Christmas. That was the best gift we could've asked for! Today Berkley is a sweet, loving & sassy 2 year old that runs, jumps & plays. She gets to be a normal 2 year old girl all because of Children's!! We could never repay them but we will do everything we can to share our story, our experience and give them our support. We hope you will too!
