Jack was born at 36 weeks gestation via an emergency c-section causing him to be without oxygen for 14 minutes. He was taken to the NICU where he underwent total body cooling for 72 hours. During this process to give his brain a break, he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and received medication to improve this. When he underwent the warming process, he was reported to have multiple seizures where an MRI confirmed several areas of the brain damaged due to his lack of oxygen at birth. While in the NICU, Jack required IV fluids, tube feedings, mechanical ventilation, and oxygen therapy. Not only were the team of experts incredibly knowledgeable, but because we were at a Level 4 NICU he was able to have the best medical team, state-of-the-art equipment, and amenities for us as parents to heal and support Jack in the best way possible. We have incredible admiration for the team who took care of our little family and support the continuation of care at Minnesota Childrens.
Today, Jack is 7 1/2 months old and doing well. He continues to see his neurologist and participates in Early Intervention through the Minneapolis school district that allows him to have Occupation and Physical Therapy every Friday in hopes to correct development delays by intervening with advice on activities, exercises, speech enhancements, and support for his brain development.
We are supporting the Walk for Amazing in hopes that we can help encourage another family who may need the care at Minnesota Children's NICU. Jack's life is extremely special and his journey is incredible due to all the talented medical professionals impacting his life along with the support of our friends and family.
