In early June 2014, Molly was very pregnant and we were getting our townhouse ready for our first daughter.
During her checkup, Molly was measuring larger than expected (someone at the store had asked if she was having twins!) so we were sent for an ultrasound.
That’s when we saw the “double bubble” in our baby’s stomach and duodenum. The tech didn’t know what to say. The doctor looked like he would cry. Because it was a hard marker.
After testing we found out that Phoebe would have Down syndrome.
We were terrified. We were hurt. We were so so so sad. We grieved for what we didn’t know. We grieved for what we wouldn’t have. We grieved for an otherwise healthy child.
Flash forward 7.5 years and I wouldn’t change a damn thing about this kid. Ups and downs are normal for all kids. All kids go through things. And all parents deal with them. Regardless of chromosomes.
That’s why I do this ride. That’s why I spend the time to train and why I spend 3 days on a bike. Because I love my daughter.
