The Goal: Safety, Independence, and Calm for Ellis
We are the Wilcox family, and we are reaching out to ask for your support in raising $20,000 to obtain a highly trained Autism Service Dog for our incredible son, Ellis Wilcox.
Ellis is 8 years old and lives with a complex set of challenges that make daily life unpredictable and, at times, dangerous. This service dog isn't a luxury; it's a vital intervention needed to ensure Ellis's safety and significantly improve his quality of life.
Meet Ellis
Ellis was diagnosed with Autism at age two, along with a secondary diagnosis of Global Developmental Delay. He also carries a rare genetic variant of the CHD7 gene. While we are still learning the full scope of this genetic condition, we know it is the primary driver of the unique difficulties he faces every day.
The Crisis: Elopement and Self-Harm
The biggest threat to Ellis's safety is his profound lack of danger awareness and his tendency to elope (run away).
-
The Elopement Risk: We have had many terrifying "close calls" with Ellis running into the street or into dangerous situations. When he is in public or unfamiliar places, the stress exacerbates this behavior. His service dog will be trained to act as a physical tether and a safety anchor, preventing him from darting away and significantly mitigating the risk of him being injured or lost.
-
Overstimulation and Self-Harm: Ellis experiences severe sensory overstimulation daily. When overwhelmed, he engages in intense self-harm behaviors, including:
-
Forcing himself to vomit.
-
Biting his hands and arms.
-
Lashing out by biting, hitting, and kicking those who try to comfort him (we even have holes in our drywall from these episodes).
-
The Service Dog Solution
We have already tried multiple interventions—including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and using location technology like AirTags—but they have unfortunately failed to manage his elopement and self-harm risk.
A fully trained service dog will provide a breakthrough intervention by offering four core, life-changing functions:
-
Elopement Prevention (Tethering): The dog will be attached to Ellis via a specialized harness and will be trained to anchor or brace when Ellis attempts to bolt, physically preventing him from running into danger.
-
Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT): The dog will be trained to lie across Ellis's lap or chest during overstimulation episodes to apply a deep, calming pressure. This physical intervention interrupts the self-harm cycle and can soothe Ellis faster than any human intervention we have tried.
-
Behavior Interruption: The dog will be trained to nudge or place its head under Ellis’s hand when he begins self-harm behaviors (like hand-biting), interrupting the action before it escalates.
-
Calm and Predictability: The presence of the dog provides a consistent, comforting focal point that reduces anxiety in stressful, unfamiliar environments, making public outings safer and less stressful for Ellis and our whole family.
How You Can Help Us Reach $20,000
The cost of training, certification, and matching Ellis with the perfect service dog, including handler training for our family, is $20,000. Every dollar we raise goes directly toward covering these necessary expenses.
Your donation is an investment in Ellis’s future—in his safety, his health, and his ability to experience the world without crippling anxiety.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping Ellis find his protector, his companion, and his lifeline.
Training a service dog to meet our child’s requirements can be very costly. On average it costs between $40,000-60,000 to raise, train, and place a service dog at 4 Paws for Ability. While 4 Paws for Ability fundraises to help cover a significant portion of this cost, families are tasked with raising $20,000 of that amount or $23,000 if receiving a poodle, doodle or papillon. We hope that we can receive assistance from our beloved family and friends to help make our service dog dream a reality.
