Meet Evander—a sweet, loving, and determined little boy who sees the world in his own unique way. Evander has autism, and while he brings so much joy to those around him, he also faces daily challenges that many people never see.

Like many children on the autism spectrum, Evander struggles with safety, communication, and navigating unfamiliar situations. One of our biggest concerns is elopement—when he unexpectedly wanders away without understanding the dangers around him. Every outing requires constant vigilance, and even simple family activities can be overwhelming.

A service dog would be so much more than a companion for Evander. It would be a source of comfort during overwhelming moments, provide an added layer of safety, help him build confidence, and give him the opportunity to experience more independence. A service dog could also help our family enjoy everyday moments with a little more peace of mind, knowing Evander has a specially trained partner by his side.

Training a service dog to meet our child’s requirements can be very costly. On average it costs between $40,000-60,000 to raise, train, and place a service dog at 4 Paws for Ability. While 4 Paws for Ability fundraises to help cover a significant portion of this cost, families are tasked with raising $20,000 of that amount or $23,000 if receiving a poodle, doodle or papillon.
