The Y has been an important part of my life since I was a kid. My Y story began when I was being bullied by other children on the playground at school. I ran off to escape and was approached by a Y counselor who talked to me and helped me calm down. He also told me about the Y and the programs they had. My mom and I had just moved to town and I told him we could not afford those things. He told me that was okay, we could still come to the Y. The Y is for everyone. They gave me scholarships to play in sports leagues and attend the Afterschool program and I found a team and place where I felt connected. It was more than just sports—I learned good sportsmanship, team work, and perseverance. Without a father in my life, I found a father figure. The Y kept me plugged in and out of trouble. When my mom and I moved again, I found the Y again in my new city and it eased the transition for me. The Y in Port Huron, Michigan became my new home.  They helped me hone my sports skills and I was able to make the high school football team, basketball team, and track team. I was able to play sports in college, earn my degree, and ultimately get a job as the Wellness Director at this YMCA, my dream job. I am thrilled to have a chance to impact lives the way my life has been impacted.  I don’t know where I would be without the Y.

Now that I am an adult, my mom and I value being able to give back to the Y, which helped us when we were in need. We were recently able to give to the YMCA of the Blue Water Area in Port Huron, Michigan by purchasing bricks to help build their new facility. It was an amazing moment for both of us and something we will both cherish forever. The Y transformed my life and I give to the Y to ensure everyone has a chance to get their life and keep their life on the right path!
