For Cora: Funding Hope for Dogs with Cancer
I’m running in Cora’s memory to fund canine cancer research
In July, I’ll be running a backyard ultramarathon in Lake Placid, New York, to honor my dog, Cora, and raise money for canine cancer research.
Cora was my beautiful yellow Labrador, my best friend, and the kind of dog who brought joy, love, and light into every part of my life. She loved being outside, meeting other dogs and humans, playing with her toys, enjoying biscuits and treats, and being close to her people. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. She was loving, gentle, and had the kindest soul. Cora had a way of making ordinary days feel special and brought joy to anyone lucky enough to meet her.
Since her early days, Cora was there for nearly all of my races, always bringing good vibes, a happy presence, and unconditional love during some of the most difficult moments. She was always there for me, regardless of what she was going through.
At just 1 year and 10 months old, Cora was diagnosed with lymphoma and acute leukemia, an aggressive, primitive cancer that moved far too quickly. Despite her strength, courage, and the incredible care she received, Cora passed away on April 24 due to complications from her disease.
Losing her so young has been heartbreaking. But as I prepare for this race, I want to turn my grief into something meaningful. Something that honors Cora’s life while helping support a future where dogs facing cancer have better options, more time, and a greater chance at life.
That’s why I’m raising money for Animal Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing cancer research for pets and people. Their work supports improved detection, treatment, and prevention of cancer, including cancers that affect dogs like Cora.
Animal Cancer Foundation’s work is rooted in comparative oncology, research that connects veterinary and human medicine. Because many cancers in dogs closely resemble cancers in humans, discoveries that help dogs may also help advance new tests and treatments for people.
A backyard ultramarathon is a race of endurance. Runners complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, for as many hours as they can continue. It is simple in structure, but incredibly difficult in practice: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
This Lake Placid race means more to me now than ever. It gives me a way to honor Cora and carry forward the never-give-up spirit she showed every day: her ability to love, stay close, and be there for her people no matter what she was facing.
For me, this race will be about more than miles. Each loop will be a way to remember Cora, carry her with me, and support every family that has heard the words no pet owner ever wants to hear: “your dog has cancer.”
Your donation, no matter the size, helps fund research that can make a difference for dogs facing cancer in the future.
