Advance your mountaineering skills and climb two of Ecuador' highest peaks!
Prepare yourself to be immersed in the mesmerizing world of high-altitude trekking and climbing as you ascend a range of iconic volcanoes in the stunning landscape of Ecuador’s Andes. Standing at 19,347 feet, Cotopaxi is the second highest peak in Ecuador and one of the most impressive volcanoes in the Andes of South America. At 20,702 feet, Chimborazo is Ecuador’s highest mountain. Its location on Earth’s equatorial bulge makes its summit the farthest point on Earth’s surface from the center of the Earth.
Capped with equatorial glaciers, climbing Cotopaxi and Chimborazo offers an excellent introduction to the world of high-altitude mountaineering. These mountains require intermediate mountaineering skills and offer straightforward climbing at moderately high altitudes.
Our Cotopaxi and Chimborazo climb start in Quito where we will spend a few days exploring Quito’s mix of colonial and modern streets. Hikes in the surrounding Ecuadorian highlands will help us to acclimatize to high altitude. Our adventure continues as we move out into the mountains and climb both Illiniza North (16,818 ft) and finally Cotopaxi. Participants who want to extend their adventure have the option of continuing on to climb the famous Chimborazo volcano. Trip length 9-14 days.
Any Mountain team leadership will provide training and fundraising guidance throughout the months leading up to our adventure to help ensure your success. The fundraising goal for this adventure is $12,000. Funds raised for Any Mountain Ecuador will be used to support gynecologic cancer research.

Cotopaxi and Chimborazo are moderately challenging climbs. Advanced climbing skills are not required, but the route is physically demanding. You must be in very good aerobic condition and able to hike for 10 to 12 hours on summit day while carrying a 20 to 25-pound pack. Previous climbing experience will greatly increase your chances of reaching the summit. Ice axe and crampon skills are needed because the final snow slopes before the summit can be as steep as 35-45 degrees. Glacier and rope travel skills are essential for a safe and successful climbing adventure. Our team of expert American and local guides will help you master your mountaineering skills before the final summit push.
This trip will progress through a series of carefully planned acclimatization summits to help you adapt to the conditions you will encounter on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. This trip will be led by a team of highly experienced, certified mountain guides outfitted with professional mountaineering equipment. All group expedition gear – including tents, stove, fuel, and communal climbing equipment – will be provided. International airfare, and non-scheduled transportation, lodging and meals are not included. Personal climbing equipment is not included. Any high-altitude adventure has risks, including the risk of altitude sickness. One of the best ways to mitigate this risk is to ensure you are in excellent physical condition before arriving in Quito. Stamina, training, and experience will help you tackle the challenges of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo.
