At The Arc Baltimore, we talk often about our mission—our “why.” Today, our vision resonates more than ever: a world where all people are valued, their voices are heard, and their impact is felt. I believe the work we do is truly world-changing.
I’ve been privileged to work for people with developmental disabilities for more than 45 years, from my early days as a direct support professional to the closure of Great Oaks and Rosewood institutions and the growth of person-directed community services. For 25 of those years, I’ve been proud to be part of The Arc Baltimore, witnessing firsthand the power of inclusion, opportunity, and believing in people.
We have made tremendous progress, but that progress is under threat. Significant budget cuts, uncertainty around Medicaid funding, and challenges to disability rights put essential services and hard-won opportunities at risk. People with developmental disabilities deserve the right to live, work, and thrive in their communities—and we cannot allow that promise to slip away.
I remain hopeful because of our dedicated team, the growing strength of self-advocates, and the power of people who believe in this mission. But passion and commitment alone are not enough. We need the resources to sustain and strengthen this work.
