How one small gift is helping stroke survivors heal and rebuild.

When a stroke strikes, every second counts.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in the United States. Each year in Brevard County, hundreds of stroke patients require ongoing rehabilitation to regain strength, function, and independence. Thanks to generous donors who support the Associate Month of Giving, our patients receive the tools they need to continue their recovery at home, at no cost.

One of those tools? A therapeutic stress ball.

“Using a stress ball as a therapeutic tool for brain injury rehabilitation can help in several ways—especially neuroplasticity, motor function recovery, and sensory integration,” says Nancy Mettner, System Director of Neurosciences at Health First. “It may seem simple, but for stroke survivors, it’s a vital part of their healing process.”

The repetitive motion from using the stress ball helps strengthen grip, improve circulation, and stimulate the brain’s motor cortex, critical for restoring hand function. It also offers comfort during an emotional challenge.

Together, we’re not just saving lives, we’re helping people live well.
