Dear Bike-A-Thon Supporters,
Bikes Not Bombs’ 35rd annual Bike-A-Thon hits the road on September 11. Bikes Not Bombs (BnB) not only continued operations during COVID collecting and distributing bikes but also expanded programs enabled by generous individuals and organizations. Bikes Not Bombs collects bicycles for shipment to partners in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean supporting transportation and education. BnB also provides services in Boston including mechanics training, career development, an earn-a-bike program and an award winning bicycle shop.
BnB has enjoyed recognition and foundation funding support to expand programs. In January 2022, Mayor of Boston Michelle Wu announced BnB is a recipient of the City’s Catalyst Grants for Green Job and Mobility Training, to help connect residents to careers in the green economy. In addition, The City of Boston’s Environment Department awarded Bikes Not Bombs $138,232 to run its Advanced Mechanics program, which provides hands-on training and career development to youth ages 15-24. In January BnB also received a three year grant of $625,000 from The Devonshire Foundation to enhance programs servicing marginalized youth. And in July The Barr Foundation awarded BnB a grant of $280,000 to enhance programs including a substantial expansion of bicycle mechanics training for youth.
Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change through programs that make a difference for youth, adults and families in their communities.
