Please join our team, Chief Butterfly Princesses, in honor of Rose M. Spielman.
Rose was a huge supporter of Bikes Not Bombs and loved participating in their Bike-A-Thons. She also hosted bike drives in her local community, collecting hundreds of bike donations. These bikes are used to equip youth in Boston with lifelong mechanical skills, shipped internationally to provide transportation options, and turned into mechanical devices to foster local economies in the Global South. Rose loved all this amazing work Bikes Not Bombs does!
Rose passed away in 2025 from ALS, a disease that took everything from her. Up until the point she could not walk, she was still biking 60 miles a week. Biking was one of her favorite activities in her life. When she was younger, she biked across the entire US, from coast to coast. Every year, as soon as the snow melted and the sun was out, she was out riding on her bike.
We would love it if you can come out and bike with us! Please invite your family and friends! If you are unable to participate, please consider donating to this great cause.
The meaning behind the team name: Rose was one of the main authors of the OpenStax Psychology textbook. This was created to be a free textbook for college students, removing barriers to education. While writing this textbook, her fellow colleagues had fancy job titles (Director of..., Dean of..., etc) but at the time her title was Consulting Psychologist for the Department of Developmental Services. She decided she needed a fancy title herself and self-assigned the name "Chief Butterfly Princess". This was used for all their work correspondence on the textbook, and the next one she wrote, Lifespan Development. When we formed a team for the ALS walk, she decided this would be our team name. We would like to continue this legacy and remember that we should all have some fun in life!
