Christine Maguire passed away a few weeks ago. I first came to know Christine in 1986 working on establishing a support group for the Committee of Mothers of the Political Prisoners, Disappeared and Assassinated of El Salvador. We both went on a delegation to El Salvador, to serve as a deterrent to government repression/terrorism for a conference of the Latin American Federation of Families of the Disappeared. We had been planning on going the year before but an earthquake caused much damage and necessitated that they postponed the conference. I remember Christine being very concerned about the earthquake survivors and maintaining contact with a family for some time after we returned.
A few years later, I left town but when I came back I joined Dorchester People for Peace and reconnected with Christine there. I deeply appreciated her perspective, especially her commitment to ensuring that DPP pursues an anti-racist agenda. Her understanding of the dynamics of class in left movements was also invaluable and will be missed in DPP.
I remember Christine riding her bike, often with her husband, Dusty, up to gatherings at meetings, demonstrations, and standouts. So it seemed appropriate to name our team after her this year. I'm sure she supported the work of Bikes not Bombs. Thank you.
