I will be riding in the annual Bike-A-Thon for the organization Bikes Not Bombs on September 12.
This organization provides bicycles to communities where basic transportation provides the difference between a job and unemployment. It trains kids in the basics of bicycle repair and provides the bike, tools and parts so they can fix and maintain a bicycle. Please visit their website to learn more about this wonderful organization. (https://bikesnotbombs.org/)
During the COVID times I found I was rarely using my car. We were a two-car family that only needed to be a one car family. I opted to sell my car and used my off-road bike for day-to-day errands. I rarely traveled more than three or four miles and winter was mild so it was hardly a challenge.
I discovered what I should have known all along: a bike with panniers is great for shopping trips, coffee runs, volunteer projects and visiting friends for the “driveway dining experience”. In a time of masks and quarantining it was freeing to be outdoors and moving, to be able to just hop on my bike and go. To not worry about having to wipe down the gas pump and credit card, to safely and guiltlessly remove a mask. To breath.
I ride to raise funds so that others can receive the simple freeing and enabling gift that I have been privileged to enjoy: a bicycle.
Please consider make a contribution to both support this organization and sponsor my ride.
