Bike-A-Thon 2021

I have run away on my bike. I have moved on my bike. I have lived on my bike. I have vacationed on my bike. Commuted, dated, outran an assailant, and yes, I have been drunk on my bike. More than once. To say that I am a bike enthusiast isn't really the what I am. I think I am more of a bike inhabiter. But who inhabits whom?

Bikes Not Bombs has been a part of my life since 1985 when a friend and I rode our bikes 1443 miles from Athens, Greece to London, England. One of my 4 Tshirts was a Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) T Shirt that I wore religiously when I interviewed fellow travelers for a piece I never got published on biking for world peace. A little vague I now realize.

What isn't vague is the work BNB does. BNB uses the bike as a entry point for social change to achieve economic mobility for black and other marginalized people. For example - the Earn a Bike Program, teaching a wild and wonderfully diverse group of youth each year not only the mechanics of bike mantenance, but map reading, nutrition, mental health, What is there not to love?

And this year, their annual Bike-A-Thon is ON MY BIRTHDAY! Kismet I tell you, kismet!
