My cat Sea Legs and I are joining forces this year and backyard birding together (from behind a safety window)!
I noticed Sea Legs' affinity towards bird watching a few weeks in after adopting her from the Richmond SPCA in 2023. She was mesmerized for hours, and soon I joined her, rapt with attention. I even created forts for the both of us so she could watch the birds while feeling hidden, and I could keep her company and enjoy the Northern Cardinals and Tufted Titmice that would visit.
This year, we saw fewer species than prior years, but are hoping that with our new installment of native plants in the backyard, that future years will be more fruitful!
- Northern Cardinal (Female & Male)
- Common Grackles
- Northern Mockingbird
- House Sparrows
- Mourning Doves (Immature & Mature)
- American Crows

Birdathon helps NVBA to support outdoor education, citizen science, habitat conservation and programs to encourage people to plant native plants and protect native wildlife. Birdathon also helps ornithologists better understand spring migration by reporting sightings through eBird, an online database of bird observations run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
