The Beacon of Life is a transitional housing facility in Des Moines that serves women who are homeless. But it’s so much more than a place to rest their heads. It’s a fresh start. It’s a support network. It’s a resource for how to take that next right step. Our women come to the Beacon of Life for many reasons and each has their own unique list of obstacles to overcome and their own goals to reach. That’s why the Beacon of Life is so successful at what it does; we meet our women where they’re at and help them get where they want to go. With lots of structure and accountability, but without judgement, we help our women on their path to self-sufficiency.

I serve on the board at the Beacon of Life because I believe in the power of helping people and I believe in the power of women. I’m involved with the Beacon of Life because they don’t believe in quick fixes – our women can live at the Beacon of Life for up to two years. I believe in the Beacon of Life because it takes a holistic approach to healing and support, not just providing housing but giving resources for mental health and substance abuse issues; assisting with employment and budgeting; and being a place where love and support is offered constantly and consistently.

July 2020 marks my first year as President of the Board of Directors. It has been a difficult year due to COVID-19 but I am so proud of the way this organization has prioritized the health and well-being of our women, staff and volunteers. I am committed to supporting the Beacon of Life with my time and my treasure and I strive to ensure that the Beacon of Life can continue the critical work that we are doing in Des Moines.
