This year, I’m raising $1,000 for M’Lynn Eatenton
If there is one dog in our shelter whose story has captured the essence of shelter work, it is M’Lynn.
In February of 2026, Sussex County faced a cold front with daily temperatures in the 10s and subzero windchills. The shelter saw a surge of intakes due to animals seized by the Office of Animal Welfare, as they had been left outside with inadequate housing. M’Lynn is a survivor of this period.
Her full name is M’Lynn Eatenton FKA (Formerly Known As) Dog 7, because she came to us with no name, but was number 7 out of a group of dogs that had been left outside to freeze. Each dog from this house was different; some were young and playful, some were quiet and reserved, and M’Lynn was more shut down than I had ever seen a dog. Her body was constantly tense as she cowered in the back of her kennel. Her ears stayed firmly raised to the sky, and her eyes stayed wide. She would follow every sound that reverberated through the shelter, and she constantly watched the ceiling with crouched posture, as if terrified that it would come falling down on her. The only time I ever saw her close her eyes and begin to relax was when she was outside, sunbathing in the yard. Being outdoors was all she had ever known, and she was still happiest lying in the grass with open air above her.
We decided an adoption event would give M’Lynn a chance to be seen at her best. Away from the kennel stress, she could show as a completely different dog to the Potential Adopters at the event. At the very least, she would get a few hours of fresh air, a break from the noises of the shelter, and see some new faces. That day, she was open to everyone who came up to meet her. While still closed off, she showed exceptional patience and potential. I could see that she was beginning to understand what human affection looked like, and slowly starting to trust us to be kind to her.
A few more events under her belt, and she was slowly making progress. I recommended her for a Shelter Skip day with a few volunteers, and through their exceptional patience, they took her on a car ride to their condo. I believe it was the first time in her whole life that she was in a home. It took time, and they never made it past the first floor, but M’Lynn was able to lay in a comfy bed under the careful watch of two people who had never met her, but would do anything to keep her safe. They brought her back to the shelter and acknowledged that she was a very scared, shutdown dog, but also affirmed that she was exceptionally sweet, and deserving of the hard work and time that it would take to reach through to her.
More events came and went, and although she remained in the care of our shelter, there were moments that we saw her opening up to complete strangers. If a new person took the time to sit with her, go slow, and make her feel safe, she would begin to melt into them. Several times, I really thought that M’Lynn had found her people and could finally picture her in a forever home.
A foster home is what completely changed the game for M’Lynn. She became positively unrecognizable, even by volunteers who had worked with her for the months in the shelter. She was completely changed by the peace, safety, and love of a home. She became playful, she visibly relaxed, and she was able to sleep without interruption - perhaps for the first time ever. She demonstrated that despite the years of neglect and the poor hand that she had been dealt by the universe, she was still able to learn how to be “just a dog.”
It’s hard to say what her life was exactly like before she came to us, but there are certain things she tells us with her behavior and body language. She is a reminder every day of why we show up, and who we are showing up for. The staff and volunteers refuse to give up on M’Lynn, no matter how slow her progress comes. She deserves to know that a loving home can belong to her, and live out the rest of her days with people who see her worth and want to help her thrive.
I hope you'll consider being a part of the mission to make the world a kinder place for animals just like M'Lynn.

Belly Rubs in the Garden
Even as she grew comfortable being in a home, she had an affinity for outdoor enrichment. She loves to be outside, and her fosters say she liked to roll around in their bushes.
M’Lynn’s First Adoption Event
Her first time out of the shelter, she was too scared to walk on the unfamiliar ground of the boardwalk. She lay with a volunteer and accepted pets from everyone she met. This is the day I saw the potential of where she could be with time, effort, and love.
Shelter Skip Day
In April, she went on a Shelter Skip Day with her future Fosters. Progress was slow, but we believe this was M’Lynn’s first time ever being inside a home. She got to relax and decompress in a completely new way.
Couch Potato
From a state of being constantly on edge to being curled up on the couch. Being in a foster home allowed M’Lynn to learn how to let her guard down and trust her surroundings.
