Once I decided I could be a runner and could run the Boston Marathon - choosing to be a part of Dougie's Team was a no brainer!! Not only does it make perfect sense to tackle Heartbreak Hill with fellow Eagles (IYKYK) - As a proud and loud autism/ASD/neurodivergent mom, my boys have been my greatest teachers in life. They have taught me how to look at and approach the world from a different lens and with a deep appreication for people's unique talents, challenges, perspectives and diversity. They have also shown me the incredible power of resilience, perseverence, creativity, kindness and the importance of a supportive and inclusive community.
Throughout our journey, since my youngest - affectionately known as "the Goob" - was diagnosed as autistic just before his 2nd birthday, we have been so lucky to have access to amazing supports and resources. Now at 7, Gabe is a thriving 2nd grader and (incredibly fast and strong) ninja warrior - I have no doubt he will go on to change the world in so many great ways! Likewise, my older son had access to early supports for coordination and communication challenges and is one of the sweetest, most empathetic, kind and talented artist the world has seen - and the greatest big brother ever!!
My hope in joining Dougie's Team is to help raise funds for The Flutie Foundation so that more families can be blessed with the same supports and opportunties that we have been offered.
So with that - I thank you in advance for joining this Super Fan on my mission to make the world a more inclusive, supportive and kind place for all - believe me, when you support the ASD community you support EVERYONE!
