Lets make Boston a better cycling city!
Why I’m Riding: From Alleycats to Cargo Bikes
I’ve lived in Boston for over 20 years, and cycling has been the heartbeat of that entire journey.
In 2001, I saw the city through the eyes of a bike messenger, delivering packages by day and racing alleycats by night. As a commuter, I learned the grit of winter riding on studded tires and the art of navigating routes that balanced safety with speed. As a racer, I’ve spent countless hours on the roads and trails from Cambridge to Concord, and as a friend, I’ve spent many summer days riding single-speeds to Walden Pond for picnics.
Now, my perspective has shifted again. As a parent, I ride my kids to school and teach them how to navigate urban roads safely. I also support my wife, Dot, in launching CargoB, an initiative that helps anyone access cargo bikes for their own errands and adventures.
Why the BCU Matters
These decades of experience have made one thing clear: Good policy creates good infrastructure, and good infrastructure enables cycling. The Boston Cyclists Union (BCU) is at the forefront of this work, improving the city for all residents by making it easier and safer to move on two wheels.
I’m proud to support the BCU because I’ve seen how much their work matters. While asking for financial support for a personal cause is a new challenge for me, it’s one I’m willing to take on for a mission this important.
The Next Adventure: Bostreal
Despite all my miles in the saddle, I’ve never actually connected Boston to the rest of New England by bike. Bostreal is a new kind of adventure for me. It’s a challenge to return to serious training and an opportunity to explore the roads beyond the Boston area.
There is no better way to justify an adventure than having a destination like Montreal. I’m excited to see the region from a new perspective—experiencing how cities and towns connect through the simple act of riding, and the immediate, powerful feeling of "being" in a place when you travel through it under your own power.
