Boston → Montréal, on Two Wheels (Again)
I’m a Bostonian.
I choose two wheels over four.
I care about my carbon footprint.
I want clean air, safe streets, and cities that work for people.
I only like dirty water in song form.
And yes—I enjoy being outdoors even when it’s cold, rainy, or humid. (Did I mention I’m a Bostonian?)
Most importantly, who I am—and how I move through the world—matters to me. I want my kids to grow up knowing their dad lives by his convictions. Choosing to bike for everyday transportation isn’t just how I get around; it’s shaped the kind of person I try to be.
But let’s be honest: getting from Point A to Point B by bike in Boston still isn’t easy.
Bike‑friendly routes can be indirect, disconnected, or nonexistent. Too often, riding safely means riding out of the way—or summoning the nerve to take the tough road. That calculation gets heavier when you have a family that depends on you.
It shouldn’t be this hard.
And it doesn’t have to be this way.
That’s why I’m once again putting my legs where my beliefs are.
Bos/tréal 2026
This year, I’m riding 400 miles from Boston to Montréal over 5 days, crossing mountains, back roads, and an international border—sleeping in a tent each night, no matter the weather. It’s a demanding ride on difficult terrain, and it’s also my favorite way to make a point.
My goal is to raise $5,000 for the Boston Cyclists Union (BCU)—the organization that’s been doing the hard, unglamorous, essential work of making our streets safer for over a decade.
Why the Boston Cyclists Union?
For more than 15 years, I’ve devoted much of my free time to improving bicycling in Boston. My focus—and BCU’s work—centers on three things:
Policy
Real change takes patience. Writing letters. Showing up to hearings. Talking (and re‑talking) with elected officials. BCU has helped win major victories like lower speed limits, Complete Streets, and Vision Zero policies—changes that make Boston safer not just for people on bikes, but for everyone.

Infrastructure
This is the holy grail. Safe, connected bike infrastructure changes everything. When protected paths are built, people ride—kids, seniors, families, commuters. Boston has made progress, but too many routes still end abruptly or fail to connect. BCU shows up again and again to push for better designs, challenge outdated assumptions, and keep momentum moving forward.

Culture
Biking should be fun—because it is fun. Boston’s bike community is diverse, welcoming, and a little weird in the best way. Events like Boston Bike Party, Taco Tour, Midnight Marathon, and Bos/tréal help turn riders into a bike family—and turn occasional cyclists into lifelong advocates.

Why Montréal?
Like Boston, Montréal is an old North American city with winter, snow, and narrow streets. Unlike Boston, it has built one of the best urban bike networks on the continent. This ride isn’t just a challenge—it’s an education. We’ll connect with advocates and planners there, learn what works, and bring those lessons home.
How you can help
Your donation supports BCU’s ongoing work to make Greater Boston a place where getting around by bike is safe, efficient, and stress‑free. It helps ensure that today’s riders—and tomorrow’s—don’t have to choose between safety and mobility.
With your support, I believe that by the time my kids are grown, Boston can be a city connected by an easy‑to‑ride network of bike paths that unlock everything the city has to offer.
So please—pretty please—consider contributing toward my $5,000 goal.
Thank you for supporting safer streets, stronger communities, and one very determined Bostonian on a bike.
With gratitude,
Jon Ramos

Not much for my safety but for the more vulnerable riders who seek the best way to get around the city. Best of luck on this ride and I do hope the vegan chili is still a thing!
