Bos/treal is a bike tour from Boston to Montreal. The ride is 400 miles over five days, camping out each night. Fifty riders do this ride together, to raise money for the Boston Cyclists Union.

The BCU is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that advances bike safety, accessibility and equity through organizing, advocacy, education, bike repair events, and more. Its mission: to transform the streets of greater Boston into equitable, inviting people-centered spaces affording access and connection for every body.

This is a tough time for cyclists -- pedestrian and cyclist deaths have been trending upward nationally for many years. The White House has ordered a freeze on federal grants involving "green infrastructure," specifically targetting bike lanes.

This is my third year riding Bos/treal. I've been a bike commuter for over 15 years. In that time, as networks of safe infrastructure have become more connected, I've seen more bike trips become less stressful, allowing more people to take them. I've seen how infrastructure influences driver behavior: newer infrastructure is far better at encouraging appropriate speeds and taming the behavior of the most aggressive drivers.

The bike is the fastest and least-unpredictable way to get to work and around the city. However, gaps remain in the network where infrastructure is poor or missing, and bikes have to take the lane with cars and trucks.
