Why is Gilda's important to me?

Cancer sucks.  It’s a bully,  and it’s scary.

My name is Brian Vasey.

Cancer has affected my family and friends, my patients and their families, and as a result of course it has affected me. I wouldn’t doubt there is anyone unaffected by cancer.

One friend from middle school contacted me out of the blue (this was 1994, I was in New York,  he was in Portland, Oregon) ; we had lost touch but he knew I was in medical school. He had a brain tumor :  melanoma had reoccurred and spread. Could I find a cure? I visited him later in the year as I interviewed for residencies in psychiatry and provided support to him and his family as best I could.  They brought me with them to a support group through a local affiliate of the cancer support community (that would later include Gilda’s club in Madison, WI). This was my first experience with the power of community in fighting the effect of cancer on patients and those who love and care for them.

Living in Wisconsin 15 years later another friend introduced me to the newly opened Gilda’s club in Dane County ; he, a cancer survivor and endurance athlete, inspired me to support Gilda’s through their annual walk/run.  Fitness and health are hugely important to me, as is the support of community and the philosophy of TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). As a physician specializing in child / adolescent psychiatry and a coach of track and cross-country at Oregon HS south of Madison, I have come to appreciate how physical health and mental health are closely connected. Fitness endeavors can bring out the best in us and we do our best when lifted up by others and when we can lift others up.

Now, 15 years after first working with Gilda's but having lost touch, I am grateful to be reconnected through Jennifer Yessa-Kast, a friend and colleague, and a cancer survivor. The goal : to raise awareness and funds through competing in and finishing Ironman Wisconsin 2025. So that no one faces cancer alone.

Thank you to Synergos !!

I’m so grateful to share that Synergos Counseling and Wellness, generously pledged to match every dollar donated to my fundraiser—up to $3,000!

2025 Wisconsin Ironman 140.6

2.1 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run

Sunday, September 7th 2025

Downtown Madison, WI

Gilda's Club Madison

Gilda's Club Madison creates a community of free emotional support, cancer education, and hope for children and adults impacted by any kind of cancer, and those who care for them. I am humbled by their strength,  and I honor them through the pursuit of endurance goals and daring mighty things : specifically in memory of my cousin Lar and friends Lori, Carol, and Jon.

*Gilda’s gives individuals the opportunity to learn from one another while receiving guidance from licensed mental health professionals. Offerings include regular support groups, short term individual counseling, patient advocacy, educational lectures, wellness activities such as yoga and guided relaxation, social activities, and family programming.

All activities are designed to help members reduce distress and learn to live fully with cancer, whatever the outcome.

Post competition and what to do next : September 21, 2025

Ironman was 2 weeks ago already : we successfully dared mighty things and proved how things are possible together : Together Everyone Achieves More. My individual finish was made possible by the support of community. It has been inspired by the Gilda's community and all who have been touched by the campaign regardless of any financial contributions made. I am personally grateful for the support of Nicole and her Synergos Counseling and Steve and Heather and Northstar counseling as well as Erik Haakenson and Oregon HS Athletics and the awesome cross country team there I am privileged to coach.

The fundraising window is extended through the Gilda's Walk / Run scheduled for October 5 (https://secure.qgiv.com/event/gildasrunwalk2025/) ...  although with the matching contributions of Synergos we have met our goal, we are hoping to exceed that though further donations in the next 2 weeks..   as the fight against cancer is without end,  we can continue to work towards assuring that no one faces cancer alone.
