April Fools
As soon as I relocated to the Exton area I decided that I wanted to find a dog to adopt. I had been looking on shelter web pages to see if any of the local pups met my (our) needs. I had my eye on one pup who was located at the BVSPCA. Her name was Poochie. She was estimated to be around 5 years of age and a poodle mix. When I told a coworker about my search she mentioned that she had recently participated in a charity event benefitting the SPCA and that she had actually MET Poochie at the event. She told me how sweet the pup was and how cute and chubby she was. I wanted to meet her myself!
I discovered that a local pet store was having an adoption event that weekend and I planned to attend to see if Poochie might be one of the attendees. SHE WAS!! I loved her from the first moment we met. The volunteer was amazing and told me that she'd drive Poochie back to the shelter so that I could fill out the required paperwork there and spend some more time with her.
When I arrived at the shelter I was counseled by another fabulous volunteer who told me that Poochie had been rescued from a kill shelter in the south by the Philadelphia SPCA in January. She was moved to the Brandywine shelter in March. I was adopting her April 1st, 2017.
Poochie had no interest in the beautiful new crate that I had purchased in case she was in need of training. Given her shelter history and lack of history that anyone had prior to January, I wasn't going to push the issue. Luckily she was perfectly house trained, so that crate was donated. She has lots of skin allergies and we have made many visits to the vet and need to take some medications. Other than her dislike for crates (which I have to explain to groomers and to vets if they "think" they will keep her for the day) she is the best friend that anyone could ask for. Best roommate ever.
I let my niece (who was 5 years old at the time) give Poochie her new forever name. She chose Lulabelle Blondie-Pie. (I'm leaving off the hyphenated last names for privacy purposes). LOL. We call her Lulu for short. She has brought so much love and joy and laughter into my life and into my family. I truly believe that this dog saved my life instead of the other way around. I will always be grateful to all of the hard working folks at the no-kill shelters for everything that they do. They are saving so much more that the animals.
