I have been an oncology nurse since 1999. I've seen so many changes and advances in my career: it looks quite different from when I did inpatient chemo in a stem-cell transplant unit in Massachusetts as a new grad. 

What hasn't changed is the cost of cancer: the physical, mental, emotional, and of course the monetary cost which can be devastating. Federal minimum wage in 1999 was $5.15. Almost 30 years later, it's only $7.25. Fewer jobs offer benefits, and even the benefits available have so many copays and deductibles. Cancer doesn't discriminate, and cost of living doesn't wait when someone is in treatment.

You know how every October we get barraged with pink items for "awareness"? Have you ever thought about where your money goes? In some cases, your dollars may fund some groundbreaking research. In other cases, you're just putting money in the pocket of someone producing pink items.

If you ever want to know how you can make a difference in your own community, look to the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia. I was there at the very first meeting back in the early 2000s where we discussed how we can support people going through cancer treatments. Even if the drugs are covered by the insurance, how does rent get paid when one can't work? Groceries? Transportation?  The electric bill? With TCF, you can see the impact of your donation, because it stays right here in northeast Georgia and directly helps those with those other costs of cancer we often overlook.
