This year I quietly celebrated being 10 years cancer-free. You see, after surviving cancer, one is always looking over one’s shoulder praying it never returns. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God to be alive, and I pray for continued health for not only myself, but all my family. Breast cancer has hit my family hard. My mother-in-law survived it only to be taken by this hideous disease 17 years later. After losing two good friends and a cousin to this disease, I was given the news that I had breast cancer. I had a mastectomy and went through chemo and radiation treatments. A couple years later, my dad was diagnosed, fought, and survived. His cousin was diagnosed and survived. My sister-in-law also was diagnosed, fought, and won as did her mother. Twice. Then my mom was diagnosed and survived. This strong history prompted me to have a second mastectomy and finally get reconstructed. I do this Walk every year to remember those I lost to Breast cancer and to honor those who have fought it and survived. Thanks to continued  research, more and more people are surviving this disease, but it’s a cure that needs to be found. I do this Walk to help the people in McHenry County, who do not have resources to fight this disease, receive the care they need.
