Meet our Honorary Captain Gessa

A note from mom - 
Gessa is the youngest of for girls. In August of 2023, at 9 years old, she started feeling very tired whenever we went for walks. One weekend her heart started racing and she had a little nose bleed. We took her to urgent care and they told us that it was possible that she had leukemia. That night our world changed completely.

She was sent to Albany Med by ambulance and there, they confirmed that it was leukemia. We stayed at the hospital for almost two weeks, got sent home and two days later she had to be hospitalized for another week. After several blood transfusions, surgery to install a port and chemotherapy treatments we were sent home again. But she still needed to go back to the hospital for weekly and sometimes daily treatments. I had to stop working to take care of her.

A couple of colleagues from work, suggested that I contact Building on Love to help with some of our bills while I was out of work. Building on Love covered our monthly rent for three months, which gave me the freedom to stay home with her during the most intensive part of her treatment.

Building on Love also connected us with a local company that purchased Christmas gifts for us. It was our best Christmas ever, considering the circumstances. It was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces and being able to watch them open presents that I wouldn’t have been able to buy for them otherwise.

We are so thankful that organizations like this exists to take the pressure off families undergoing emergency situations like ours. It’s hard to have to choose between being there for your ailing child and having to go to work or not having money to pay your bills.
