Robert Grell Obituary

Robert K. Grell, a respected resident of Staten Island, New York, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 68. He was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in May 2025. Born on May 8, 1957, Robert led a life marked by dedication and service to his country and community.

Robert served in the Navy from 1983 to 2003, achieving the rank of HMC. His military career was distinguished by numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star, National Defense, Navy Good Conduct, Navy Marine Corps Commendation, Naval Reserve Merit Service, Iraq Campaign Service, War on Terror Service, Presidential Unit Citation, and Navy Marine Corps Unit Commendation. Following his military service, Robert worked for 31 years as a firefighter for the NYC Fire Department, where he received the Pre-Hospital Save Commendation and the Service Rating B Award. He worked at the Engine 278 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and at Engine 153 Broad St in Staten Island.

He was married for 36 years to his beloved wife, Michele, and was a devoted father to his son, Steven, and daughter, Jennifer. He is predeceased by his mother, Alice Grell, his father, Robert A. Grell, and his cherished dog of 16 years, Sarah.

Robert was passionate about running, traveling, and walking his dog, Sarah, on the beach. He was an active member of the Church of the Ascension and the American Legion: Cespino Russo Post 1544. After retiring from the Navy, he joined the New York Naval Militia and continued to serve his community as a volunteer with the Disaster Assistance Response Team, participating in cleanup and rebuilding efforts across the country.

Additionally, Robert was a New York State Emergency Medical Technician and taught at the Staten Island Medical Training Center, helping many become EMTs. He worked at both the former Richmond Memorial Hospital and the former Staten Island Hospital as an EMT. His dedication to service extended to volunteering with the North Shore Animal League on Long Island and the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation, where he provided transportation services for retired FDNY members and their families.

Robert K. Grell will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and his country. His legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.
