My family lost our beloved Jeremy Flowers on September 21st 2018, to the cruelty of CJD. Jeremy was my brother. He was only 49. Those most directly traumatized were his wife Jenny, son Zach, and daughter Sara. Of course, Jeremy was bewildered and scared when the range of symptoms began.
Like so many CJD victims who are devastated in experiencing CJD, simply getting a diagnosis can be very difficult. If not for the staunch determination of his wife Jenny, that diagnosis would have been more brief, if at all. He only had 43 days remaining, following that diagnosis.
Our immediate family gathered around his hospital bed on that nightmarish first day of fall, and agonized with him as we watched him struggle for each and every breath. Then he was at peace, and CJD had claimed another life.
We know that a great deal of progress has been made in the last 8 years, in terms of treatment. But more work remains to develop even more effective pharmaceuticals, and hopefully a cure.
These advances have been made possible by the CJD Foundation, through ongoing research funding. Their mission is reliant on grassroots fundraising.
I will be part of that support for this cause through fundraising, and raising awareness, in memory of Jeremy, as part of my running the New York City Marathon, on November 1st. I, and my family, ask for your support, on behalf of the CJD Foundation.
On November 1st I will be wearing the CJD logo on my running jersey, with Jeremy on my back, as I run from Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and then Manhattan, to finish in Central Park. There are always more than a million spectators on the course.
