Event Description

Attention GP2C climbers, hikers, walkers, runners, riders, sponsors and supporters…

Welcome to Climb for a Cure!

Throughout the month of October (Rett Syndrome Awareness month!) GP2C will host several Climb for a Cure events nationwide. Our supporters will be climbing, hiking, walking, running, and riding in honor of those battling Rett Syndrome!

Our main event will be spearheaded by long-time volunteers/supporters of GP2C, Shawn Shafai and Julie Nordquist, who will Climb for a Cure as they travel to Nepal to tackle some of the highest peaks in the world! Experienced climbers, Shawn and Julie will trek first to the famous Mount Everest Base Camp (a world-class event in itself - elevation 17,500'). From EBC base camp, they will summit Kala Patthar (elevation 18,500'), and then the feature climb, the summit of Imja Tse, also known as the "Island Peak" (elevation 20,300').

  • Julie and Shawn will each trek over 150 miles, burning 100,000 calories, and climbing a total of seven smiles straight up!
  • But that’s nothing compared to the challenges that those affected by Rett Syndrome (and their families) endure in their fight against Rett Syndrome
  • So, Julie and Shawn will dedicate their efforts to Rett girls and boys, women and men, and their loved ones on their climb in Nepal this October

Girl Power 2 Cure is a 501c3 nonprofit fighting for those affected by Rett Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disorder. Rett Syndrome is caused by a single gene mutation leading to under-production of MECP-2, a critical brain protein. Those affected lose their ability to speak, walk and use their hands, depending on others for every part of their day. Complications include seizures, sudden death and scoliosis. Despite mass confusion in their central nervous systems, and related physical disabilities, girls and boys with Rett Syndrome function at cognitive levels similar to their peers… they are smart, strong, and waiting bravely for us to unlock the door to their recovery.

Today, there is no cure. But Rett Syndrome is potentially CURABLE! Animal research has proven that symptoms subside when MECP-2 protein levels are restored to normal levels. Please join us, as a hiker, walker, runner, rider, donor or sponsor, to help continue the fight to cure Rett Syndrome!
