I've been riding Coast to the Cure for more than ten years. This year the team has a new name, and it's the right one.
Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow on nerves. For my daughter Camilla, that includes optic nerve gliomas, tumors on the nerves that carry sight. She has low vision because of them, and she is followed closely, always. At the start of high school she spent nearly two years in chemotherapy.
If you met her, you would know none of it. She just finds a way. Around whatever is in front of her, over it, through it, every time, without making it a thing. She is a force.
Next week she leaves for Merrimack College to study health sciences. She wants to be a nurse, and specifically she wants to work in pediatric oncology, so the kids sitting in those chairs can look up and see someone who has already been where they are and came out the other side of it swinging.
That's who I'm riding for.
The money we raise goes to NF Northeast, which puts it into direct support for families, advocacy, and research that is actually moving. Ten years in, I can tell you the miles are the easy part. Progress takes money, and it takes people who keep showing up.
Whatever you can give, thank you. Ride with Camilla's Crew.
