Why College Mentors?

Did you know that mentoring transforms lives? Research shows that kids with mentors view themselves and their futures more positively than those without mentors. Not only do they view themselves in a more confident light, but they also achieve more positive outcomes in school, the workplace, and their communities. We all know that growing up is challenging, but, with a mentor, it’s a little easier. And that’s exactly why I’ve chosen to be volunteer with College Mentors.

This semester I joined an initiative called College Mentors for Kids. It gives elementary-aged kids (“Little Buddies”) in the Blacksburg area a chance to have first-hand experience of what it’s like to be on a college campus while doing fun activities! Around 79% of the little buddies in College Mentors for Kids come from low-income homes and about 60% would-be first-generation college students. Although it can be helpful to know these statistics, they only tell part of the story.

Fundraising is extremely important to keep this club going. The money we raise is used to provide snacks, transportation, and activity supplies to give the little buddies amazing activity days. Our little buddies participate in this program, at no cost to them, so the money we raise allows them to have fun during activity days! The program is 100% donation-based, without donations there is no activity!

Any donations would be appreciated, whether that’s $5 or $50. I’m starting with a $200 goal - but I hope to  able to increase it!

I enjoy volunteering because I get to spend time with my little buddy each week and participate in fun activities together with other mentors and buddies. I also enjoy learning alongside my buddy about careers, culture and diversity, and community service. Not only do we like exploring our world together, but my little buddy helps me grow as a person too. This program helps me to give back to my community, and I'm learning important leadership skills in the meantime.

I can't do all of this without your help, though. Please consider making a gift to help me meet my fundraising goal! Your contribution will allow us to continue this program on our campus so that we can spread the powering of mentoring.
