This year, I'm walking with extra purpose as The Children's Heart Foundation celebrates 30 incredible years of funding research that saves lives and changes futures.
This year marks our very first CHD Walk, and it is one that carries deep meaning for our family. We are walking in honor of our beautiful son, Gideon Michael Verner.
Gideon was diagnosed with PA/IVS, and shortly after birth, doctors discovered he also had a right ventricle–dependent coronary artery. His condition was complex and severe, and we were faced with unimaginable decisions no parent should ever have to make. At just five days old, knowing the road ahead would mean a prolonged life on support with uncertain outcomes, we made the most difficult choice of our lives—to allow Gideon to pass peacefully in my arms, surrounded by love.
Though his time here was brief, Gideon’s impact on our lives is immeasurable. He is deeply loved and forever part of our family.
Today, we walk not only for Gideon, but for all the little heart warriors and their families. We walk for those currently facing multiple surgeries, long hospital stays, and the unknown. We walk for the parents who are making impossible decisions, just like we did. And we walk in gratitude—for the precious time we had, and for the memory keepsakes that allow us to hold onto Gideon in tangible ways.
Gideon’s twin sister, Astoria, is now two months old, and his big brother Ryker, age six, carries his memory with pride and love. As a family, we are committed to honoring Gideon’s life by supporting research, raising awareness, and helping other families who find themselves on this difficult journey.
