Care through the ages

When a child comes to Children's, they're experiencing a big moment in their life story. A moment they'll remember for the rest of their life.

29 years later, Coley Wright can still remember the emergency department (ED) and clinical staff who helped save her foot after suffering from a severe case of the chicken pox and a strep infection that was eating away at the bone and growth plate in her ankle.

Coley spent 35 days at Children’s being treated for the infection and recovering from the emergency surgery she had less than an hour after arriving in the ED.

This past summer, Coley found herself in her parents’ shoes.

She picked up her toddler son, Bates, from daycare and noticed his breathing was significantly labored, so she took him to the Children’s Partners in Pediatrics clinic in St. Louis Park. After multiple breathing tests and chest x-rays, the care team determined he needed to go to the ED at Children’s for further testing.

Bates was diagnosed with viral pneumonia and was admitted. During his stay, his oxygen levels dipped dangerously low, but his care team quickly responded by getting him on additional oxygen supplements to bring him back to a safe level.

When asked why she loves Children’s, Coley said:

“I have experienced the magic of Children’s firsthand, both as a patient and as a patient’s parent, and I will continue to do everything I can to be an advocate for the great work the nurses and doctors do. Their quick thinking saves lives — like they did for me all of those years ago.”

Coley’s parents also still feel connected to Children’s since Coley’s hospital stay 30 years ago. Her mother volunteered at Children’s, and her father served on the Children’s Minnesota Board of Directors.
