As many may know, I used to spend every week day at the Baltimore Humane Society, even before they changed their name! Spending the time I did with co-workers, volunteers, and the dogs of course, there will always be a spot in my heart for this shelter. The animals brought in from owners who no longer wanted them, could not keep them do to lease requirements, moving, financial reasons, etc., receive so much love and attention from the staff and volunteers. Animals are seen and treated by licensed vets, kept in a clean facility and maintain full, happy bellies. The Baltimore Humane Society is not government funded and operates off of donations. I know by the position I held, that cash flow is extremely  low and is stretched to utilities, lawn maintenance, payroll, insurance, medications and vaccines, toys, food and the list goes on.
