Our Owen turned 11 this in April of this year.  If asked to describe Owen, the first word that would come to our minds is books!  This boy loves to read and is rarely seen without a book in his hand, in fact a pile of books is always beside him.    When he had a choose a 'stuffie' to take away with him on his school overnight trip, he took books instead!!!    When he was younger, we were told that he might not read - we ignored this and supported him in every way we could to learn to read.  All people who have Down syndrome can learn to read in their own way when given the right supports.  We have benefited greatly from the literacy initiatives put on by CDSS and teachers at Owen's school have also attended CDSS programming.    Owen has now discovered story telling and he can often be found (when not reading) creating stories of his own on his ipad.    One day, we are sure this boy will find a career as author, story teller or perhaps even an editor.  Watch out world!!
