We're back at it again this year as we prepare for our favorite weekend of 2023, the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend. The countdown has officially begun and that means it's time to start raising the much needed funds for Girl Power 2 Cure in their efforts to find a cure for Rett Syndrome. This will be my 8th (!) year running for team Sweet Caroline's Crew and fingers crossed that this will be our best year yet.
As you may know, Rett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder that predominantly affects females but can also affect boys. It is the leading genetic cause of severe impairment in girls, brought on by a single gene mutation that leads to underproduction of an important brain protein. Kids are born “normal,” but without the protein, begin to lose acquired skills between 1 and 3 years old. Most lose their ability to speak, walk or use their hands, and depend on their families for every part of their day. Complications also include seizures, scoliosis, and the potential for sudden death. Caroline, my best friend's daughter, is a Rett warrior and our reason for continuing our commitment to GP2C every year.
Today, there is no cure. But Rett Syndrome is CURABLE! Research has proven once protein levels are back to normal levels, symptoms subside. And so, we continue our battle.
