Over the course of three weeks earlier this year, I drove to Texas and back with my sister for my 13th total eclipse, and stayed with 8 friends & 5 cousins, met 10 others for a meal or a visit, and traveled through 20 states. Although the eclipse itself was just glimpsed through holes in the clouds, I had an incredible journey.
I consider myself so lucky to have the mobility and time to be able to take such a trip; even more, I feel very blessed to have been able to connect with so many people near and dear to us.
But for many elders, this type of journey would not be possible: they do not have family or friends who visit, they need help getting to medical appointments, they live much of their time alone in their homes.
Even though I have retired from my office job at FriendshipWorks, I still support their mission of reducing elder isolation and creating connections. So I am participating in their Elderbration and Walk to End Elder Isolation again this May 19, and hope you will support me with a donation.
FriendshipWorks was founded 40 years ago to help reduce social isolation and enhance the quality of life of older adults in Greater Boston. They match volunteers with elders in need of a friendly visit, helping hand, escort to a medical appointment, or the unconditional love of a pet visit. All at NO COST to the elder!
