This year I would like to raise funds to support the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, FAER, and offer a scalable match of donations to honor the long-standing collaborative research efforts of the three leaders of the MCW Anesthesia Respiratory Research laboratory Eckehard A E Stuth, MD, Astrid G Stucke, MD and Edward J Zuperku, PhD,  Many of you know them well.  Their contributions in more than three decades of collaborative research to elucidate the mechanisms by which volatile anesthetics and opioids affect respiratory neurotransmission and central respiratory control mechanisms have led to many insights in how these indispensable anesthetic agents affect respiratory neurotransmission and the central control of respiration.

Both Dr Stuth and Dr Stucke were supported early on in their careers by FAER seed funding for junior clinician investigators and enlightened scheduling efforts by Dr George Hoffman to allow for generous protected non-clinical time for research, a winning combination, which has resulted in continuous and ongoing major NIH funding for now over three decades.  

The Stuth/Stucke/Zuperku joint collaboration has also been an exemplary effort from early on in the value of diversity with many talented women and men from diverse ethnic backgrounds contributing as research fellows to the research output.

Eckehard and Astrid have given time and money to FAER and they along with many of us at MCW acknowledge FAER’s outstanding work to support physician scientists and research in anesthesiology, a mission that benefits every anesthesiologist and the entire medical field. FAER funds have supported many of our MCW clinician scientists over the years and their research support has been important to their success.

FAER has been so impressed with our MCW giving in our past "Get Ebert's Money" campaign that they have created the Academic Giving Challenge to make fundraising this year a competition among 18 other academic programs.  The "Gaming" element should be fun and the top fundraising departments will be rewarded with a talk from one of our scientific leaders in Anesthesiology!
