Kazoo's Fundraising Page for Heart Camp

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! This last year has been a huge step in the role I play for Camp del Corazon and it's one that I am very blessed to take part in. We kicked it off with the hybrid P.A.C.E. retreat, then virtual camp 2.1, and in-person-camp at the end of summer :D The best part was 0 COVID-19 cases! If you don't know what PACE is, it is a year-round program for young adults with heart defects and we host events to equip us with life skills tailored towards people with cardiac health issues and a community they can relate to. This was my last year as a PACEMAKER and I wanted to go out with a bang. Some of the activities I hosted were two workshops, one was an in-person, socially distanced workout and other was online and called "Alone vs Lonely", as well as a Talent Show. It might not seem so exciting to people unaffected by heart disease, but for those of us who had to spend months to years in isolation and away from our communities, this was much needed. Next up was 2.1! If you saw my stories on Instagram and Snapchat, you know I went craAAAzy with virtual camp. Vader and I pied each other when the kids got trivia answers correct, danced in a 3'x3' section of my room, and had deep discussions with my cabin from Clipper II- ALL in front of a green screen. Through online, we were able to reach kids from South America, have a Spanish-speaking cabin, reach children in the hospital, and those who are immunocompromised. This safe space is what brings their home away from home right to their actual homes. It was heart-warming to watch their families see what joy heart camp brings to their kids' lives and participate with them. We plan to keep this for years to come! Last but not least was in person camp with Session 2's Ding Ding Ding DINGHY!!!!! I love my girls so much and if you're one of them and reading this I miss you

Camp del Corazon (Camp of the Heart) was inspired by a patient of Dr. Kevin Shannon. Even though the young man had undergone an operation that dramatically improved the function of his heart, he was still suffering from emotional pain. He was back in school, back in little league baseball, even trying in-line skating for the first time, but he was so embarrassed by his scars that he wouldn't remove his shirt to be examined by the doctor.

Dr. Shannon felt that if his patient could spend time with other kids who'd had heart surgery, he'd be less self-conscious. He located a camp in Louisiana for kids with heart disease, but the young man's mother just couldn't bear to send him so far away. When Dr. Shannon discussed the situation with Lisa Knight, R.N., her solution was simple: "We can do that." And so they did.

They set about fund-raising to ensure that the medically-supervised summer camp would be free for children ages 7-17 who had heart disease. When Camp del Corazon began in 1995, 49 campers spent three days on beautiful Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. Over the years, the camp has grown to three five-day sessions with more than 350 campers. Camp del Corazon is staffed completely by volunteer counselors, nurses, and physicians who give of their hearts to help these special kids.

Camp del Corazon has grown into a non-profit organization dedicated to providing experiential programs for children and families living with heart disease. Programs include a free-of-charge, residential summer camp, virtual programs, leadership retreats, educational symposiums and family weekend programs custom designed to enrich the lives of their unique population. Each year we serve more than 600 children and families because of your support!
